Nicolaiconcert

The Nicolaïkerk (St. Nicholas church) is a medieval church in the southern part of the old city of Utrecht in the Netherlands. This building is the home of two very interesting instruments, the organ built by Marcussen and the carillon built by the famous Hemony brothers (17th century). These instruments are the backbone for a series of concerts, which are organised each year by the Stichting Culturele Evenementen Nicolaïkerk (Foundation for Cultural Events in the Nicolaïkerk ).

Duration of the concerts is approx. 45 minutes.
Tickets are sold at the entrance of the church, doors open half an hour before concert start time. No reservation is needed.

For the current program you can browse our program agenda.

The Nicolaikerk is located at the Nicolaaskerkhof in the inner city of Utrecht (See city map Utrecht).

Maxim Shalygin - Songlessness

In its 25 years of existence, the saxophone quartet Amstel Quartet has used the saxophone to its full potential. No wonder the Dutch press called the Amstel Quartet “the most colorful saxophone quartet in the world”. For several years the quartet has been working closely with the Ukrainian-Dutch composer Maxim Shalygin, who writes superb, ambitious, and physically intense music. The work Todos los Fuego el Fuego that he wrote for Amstel Quartet and the Keuris Quartet made it into the NRC’s top 5 best classical music of 2019. The collaboration went so well that Shalygin rewrote his new piece Songlessness for the Amstel Quartet, this time joined by organist Una Cintina. An imaginative and infinite sound world that explores our perception of time and its flexibility.
