The Spanish Vihuela
Capella Sancta Maria directed by Enrique Lopez
Music by Josquin des Prez and his contemporaries.
This program combines choir and vihuela transcritions from Vladerrabano, Fuenllana and Pisador. All choir pieces interpreted show up in vihuela books, except Gombert's Dezilde al cavallero (Cancionero de Upsala) whose link with Spain has been strong enaugh to include it as well.

Bach cantatas
Cappella di San Pietro
Traditionally the series of Summer concerts closes with a Cantata by John Sebastian Bach. We offer our visitors a free concert, preceded by a Cantata during a religious service, which starts at 10.00 hours.
Programm:
cantata Lobe den Herren, den mächtigen König der Erde (BWV 137) during the service
cantata Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis (BWV 21) during the concert.
At 12.15 hours the concert in the church will be followed by a concert on the carillon with music by J.S. Bach.
Adminission is free, however, a donation is very much appreciated.

(Commissioned for the ninth centenary of Chichester Cathedral, 1975)
Herbert Howells (1892 - 1983) - Chichester Service
(for the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity, Chichester)
Leonard Bernstein ( 1918 - 1990 ) - Chichester Psalms
(Commissioned by the very rev. Walter Hussey, Dean of Chicheser Cathedal, for its 1965 Festival.)
Chichester Cathedral has a great musical tradition, going back to its famed organist composer of the early 17th century, Thomas Weelkes.
The Dean of Chichester Cathedral Walter Hussey, was a very art-loving person. He commissioned in the 20th century several famous liturgical pieces. A lot composers have since then written beautifull compositions for services and festivals at Chichester. among them Jonathan Harvey, Geoffry Burgon, Lennox Berkeley, Herbert Howells.
Three of these very interesting and famous pieces are included in this program, The Chichester Mass by William Albright, and the Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein. Also the Chichester Servic by Herbert Howells, who wrote almost 20 Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis compositions for the important English cathedrals and their choirs.
All the musical items of the Anglican choirtraditon together in one concert: Motet, Mass, Canticles and Psalms. And all of them from famous rather different traditions and style periods.
