Leonard Bernstein ( 1918 - 1990 ) - Chichester Psalms
(Commissioned by the very rev. Walter Hussey, Dean of Chicheser Cathedal, for its 1965 Festival.)

Chichester Cathedral has a great musical tradition, going back to its famed organist composer of the early 17th century, Thomas Weelkes.

The Dean of Chichester Cathedral Walter Hussey, was a very art-loving person. He commissioned in the 20th century several famous liturgical pieces. A lot composers have since then written beautifull compositions for services and festivals at Chichester. among them Jonathan Harvey, Geoffry Burgon, Lennox Berkeley, Herbert Howells.

Three of these very interesting and famous pieces are included in this program, The Chichester Mass by William Albright, and the Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein. Also the Chichester Servic by Herbert Howells, who wrote almost 20 Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis compositions for the important English cathedrals and their choirs.
All the musical items of the Anglican choirtraditon together in one concert: Motet, Mass, Canticles and Psalms. And all of them from famous rather different traditions and style periods.
